There is something very raw and fresh about these photos. I was very stubborn then, and insisted on ignoring all famous photographers, trying to focus completely on what I cared about conceptually and aesthetically. I spent very little time in the darkroom -- I didn't give a shit about refinement of the craft, and I embraced the unpredictable imperfections. And I didn't give a shit what anyone else was doing -- that's not what it was about. It was about finding the little bits of beauty I could dig up in my isolated suburban world, and collecting remnants of them through photography.
